AI and SEO in 2026: what changed and what to do

AI answers in Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity changed how people find businesses. Practically: what works now and what's a waste of time.

Search is no longer just ten blue links. Google shows AI summaries; people ask ChatGPT and Perplexity directly. Here's what that means in practice for a small business.

What changed

  • Some traffic disappears into the AI answer. If a question has a simple answer, the user gets it without clicking a site. Informational "what is X" articles lose clicks.
  • But buyer-intent queries stay. "Online store development price", "inheritance lawyer Plovdiv", "tyre repair near me" — people still open a site and get in touch.
  • AI systems cite sources. Perplexity and Google AI show which sites they draw from. Being among them is the new "being on page one".

What works now

  1. Write about decisions, not definitions. Not "what is a headless store" but "when a headless store is worth it and what it costs". Specifics, prices, steps.
  2. Answer directly in the first lines. Both AI and people grab the first clear paragraph. Don't make them wade through an intro.
  3. Structured data. FAQPage, Article, Product, LocalBusiness — this is how machines understand context and cite you more often.
  4. llms.txt and clean HTML. If your site renders only with JavaScript and has no machine-readable text, AI agents skip you. More here.
  5. Local and niche. Broad topics are taken. "SEO for a law firm in Pazardzhik" has three competitors, not three thousand.

What's a waste of time

  • Dumping 50 thin AI-generated articles "for volume". Google spots them and doesn't rank them.
  • Keyword stuffing, hidden text, old tricks.
  • Chasing traffic for queries where nobody is there to buy.

A practical step

Check Google Search Console for queries where you already show but don't get clicked (position 5–15, low CTR). Those are the pages whose title and first paragraph are worth sharpening today.
